Signage

What is the purpose of a sign?

Everyone is exposed to signage on a daily basis. The whole point of an effective sign is to use design, symbols, and color to catch your attention instantly. With the help of visual graphics, signs are created to display information to a particular audience. Banners, billboards, street signs, digital displays are typical examples.

Since all signs have a purpose, it is best to create one that is intentionally functional in design, some of which are discussed below:

1.    Identity and recognition

Signage is often designed to help individuals identify and recognize a brand or place. A sign that is visible and easy to read is more identifiable than others. It tells the world who you are and where you are located. A well-placed sign having the correct height and size brings customers to the right location and lures others as well.

2.    Advertising and marketing

You want people to be aware that your company exists. A well-designed sign or logo conveys a powerful message about you and the products or services you provide. It should complement all your other marketing efforts. Constant exposure to your brand and awareness strengthens as well as expands the business.

3.    Attract

Signage is designed to attract and persuade users to a business. Those used on the exterior, such as building wraps and window displays, are supposed to entice customers to venture inside and make a purchase. They could be for promotional purposes such as grand openings or special discounts on events or holidays. On the other hand, interior signs are for encouraging people to explore the area and participate in all that it has to offer. Once inside, you want customers to locate and buy items while having an overall good experience.

4.    Direct

Directional signage helps navigate customers to a location. They are essential for businesses that are spread out over a large space, such as shopping malls, hospitals, museums, zoos, etc. or for outdoor events such as exhibitions and festivals. Basic signs like drive-thru and welcome are inexpensive yet essential to create ease for customers. Directional signage can also be used inside a complex to prevent customers or visitors from getting lost, which could generate negative reviews for the business.

5.    Inform

Signage that conveys information about a facility or service, such as maps, directories, instructional or interpretive signs are commonly used at tourist attractions, recreational facilities, large complexes, malls, etc. to enhance a customer’s experience.

6.    Warn and regulate

Many signs give warning and safety instructions about threats or hazard in and around a community. They are located in hospitals, offices, schools, or out on the road. Their function is to communicate a warning, a health issue, convey rules, provide work regulations, etc.

And sometimes, the job of a sign is nothing more than to fill up an empty spot or to enhance the overall appeal of a place.
